The Broken Record
by Jonathan Louis Dent
directed by Megan Sandberg-Zakian
August 15-30, 2015, FringeNYC at Teatro LATEA at the Clemente, NYC
THE BROKEN RECORD is a new play that examines the relationships between black people and police officers in the United States, and the violence that so often ensues. Set in present day New York City, THE BROKEN RECORD follows the story of a homeless man, Jiva, who witnesses a young black man's shooting at the hands of a white police officer at a bus-stop. Jiva attempts to prevent this fatal event as the day repeats over and over. THE BROKEN RECORD gives voice to the fury, helplessness, and grief we feel watching stories like this play on repeat, and asks the questions on so many minds: Why are black people continually being shot by the police and how can these fatal encounters be stopped?
